Lord Sarin is a Sydney-based hip-hop producer and beatmaker who searches far and wide for rare and exotic samples to flip into projects with entire worlds threaded through. Chico Escobarr, originally from North Carolina, is a powerhouse of street knowledge and justice served through infectious flows and dark storytelling. Scrolls of Subutai is the nuclear reaction of these two forces combining, resulting in something new.
This 6-track EP is thematically tied to Subutai, one of Genghis Khan's greatest generals and one of the most accomplished military strategists of all time. It draws from this wisdom under pressure to talk about survival during street warfare, honouring the fallen, and how desperate times call upon desperate measures. The project musically evolves from somber guitar melodies without drums all the way to DJ Screw-inspired wavy-ness, with an ancient warfare aesthetic tethering it together.
