Released in June 2009 after Mos Def parted ways with Geffen, The Ecstatic was his first album for indie label Downtown Records and instantly reversed the lukewarm reception of his prior two records. Built on a murderers' row of production from Madlib, J Dilla, Oh No, The Neptunes, Preservation and Georgia Anne Muldrow, the album's globe-trotting, jazz- and Middle Eastern-inflected soundscapes gave Mos Def his most adventurous canvas yet. It debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200, scored an 81 on Metacritic, and picked up two Grammy nominations including Best Rap Album — cementing it as one of the most acclaimed hip-hop releases of its era.
