Released September 21, 1993 on Tommy Boy Records, Buhloone Mindstate is De La Soul's third album and a pivotal artistic leap, built around live horns from Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley and guest spots from Gang Starr's Guru and old-school legend Biz Markie. Lead single "Breakadawn" samples Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson, while the instrumental "I Be Blowin'" and introspective "I Am I Be" showed the group at its most experimental and self-referential. Rolling Stone has ranked it among the greatest hip-hop albums ever made.
