Released on Loud Records in February 2000, Let's Get Free is the debut album from Brooklyn/Florida duo dead prez (M-1 and stic.man), built almost entirely on production by their own Mutant Academy collective and Hedrush. The record tackles police brutality, systemic racism and the commodification of Black culture head-on, with "Hip-Hop" and "It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop" becoming cornerstone anthems of conscious rap. Its cover art, depicting the duo armed in a classroom, was censored by several US retailers, only adding to the album's reputation as one of the most defiantly political records in hip hop history.
