Released April 19, 1994 on Columbia Records, Illmatic is Nas's debut album and one of the most acclaimed records in hip-hop history, built on production from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip and L.E.S. Its vivid, poetic snapshots of life in Queensbridge on tracks like "N.Y. State of Mind" and "The World Is Yours" set a new lyrical standard for the genre. The Source famously awarded it a rare 5-mic rating, and it remains the benchmark against which nearly every rap debut since has been measured.
